5 Parenting Tips We Wish We Knew Sooner

Parenting is one of the most rewarding journeys, but it's also full of learning curves and challenges. As parents of four, we've been through our fair share of sleepless nights, endless tantrums, and plenty of “what now?” moments. Through the years, we’ve discovered some helpful parenting tips that made all the difference for us, and they’re the tips we wish we had known when we first started this journey.

  1. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff (and the Big Stuff Too!) As much as we all want a spotless home and perfect children, the reality is that life with little ones is far from perfect—and that’s completely fine! Don’t get too hung up on the mess, the toys scattered everywhere, or the spilled milk. What matters most is that your family is happy and healthy. We learned that embracing the mess was one of the best parenting decisions we made!

  2. Routine is Your Best Friend At first, we thought routines were for strict parents or military families, but we quickly learned that having a general structure to our day was a game changer. Whether it’s breakfast at the same time every day, a consistent bedtime, or setting aside time for play, routines help give your little ones a sense of security. While flexibility is key, routines reduce the chaos and make the day easier to manage.

  3. Trust Your Parenting Instincts Every child is different, and the advice you get from well-meaning friends and family can be overwhelming. Our best advice is simple: Trust your gut. You are your child’s best advocate, and deep down, you already know what’s best for them. Don’t be afraid to block out the noise and go with what feels right for your family.

  4. Sleep When You Can Oh, sleep. It can feel like a distant dream when you’re in the thick of sleepless nights with a newborn or a toddler who still wakes up at odd hours. The truth is, you will never appreciate sleep the way you do once you become a parent. So, when you can, sleep. Nap when the baby naps, delegate when possible, and ask for help so you can catch up on rest. It might not feel like a priority in the moment, but trust us—your body will thank you later.

  5. Celebrate Every Milestone (Even the Little Ones) Parenting is filled with milestones, from the first time your baby sleeps through the night to the day they walk. But we learned early on that celebrating the small wins—the first smile, the first word, the first time they make their own bed—has the most impact. Every little moment is a victory, and celebrating them creates lasting memories and builds connection.

Parenting is a learning process, and while we may not have all the answers, these tips have made our journey much smoother. We hope these insights can help you embrace the beautiful chaos of raising little ones with a bit more ease and joy.
